Project Manager, The Ethics of Inclusion Study; PI: Sandra Soo-Jin Lee 

Position Overview

The Project Manager will manage the coordination and implementation the multi-institutional NIH R01 grant funded study “Ethics of Inclusion: Diversity in Precision Medicine Research” under the supervision of PIs: Sandra Soo-Jin Lee (Columbia) and Janet Shim (UCSF).  The Project Manager is expected to contribute substantively to the intellectual work of the study in multiple domains, such as providing input on the direction of data collection and analyses, developing ways to implement and achieve study aims, and contributing to dissemination and publication. Additionally, the Project Manager is expected to engage in a significant amount of logistical work, including scheduling, correspondence, managing study team personnel and overseeing the financial details of the project.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong interests in bioethics or social studies of health.
  • A minimum of three years of qualitative research experience, including lead roles in data collection, analysis, and dissemination. 
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including one-on-one interactions as well as in groups. 
  • Demonstrated experience in writing papers, reports, or presentations.
  • Demonstrated organizational abilities and professional approach
  • Ability to work with multi-institutional research team and to collaborate across organizations

Preferred Qualifications

  • MA or PhD in sociology, anthropology, or related social science discipline preferred.
  • Experience with NIH grant funded research.

Research Associate, The Cascade Genetic Testing Study; PI: Sandra Soo-Jin Lee

Position Overview:

The Division of Ethics at Columbia University is seeking a Research Associate to support qualitative research on ethical, legal, and social issues related to genetics research and its clinical translation. The Research Associate will work with Dr. Sandra Soo-Jin Lee on projects that will require a combination of administrative and scholarly work.

Specific responsibilities and qualities include:

  • Support research using scientific, medical, and legal databases and qualitative data management software (eg. Dedoose, Atlas.ti, NVivo)
  • Support development of research instruments to investigate stakeholder perspectives and decision-making.
  • Support qualitative data analysis and development of manuscripts, presentations, and grant proposals.
  • Must possess strong critical thinking, writing, and complex problem-solving skills.
  • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster good working relationships on multi-institutional study teams.
  • Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and possess excellent time management skills.

Requirements: A Master’s degree in the social sciences, bioethics, public health or related field is required. Candidates should have experience in qualitative research and demonstrate outstanding writing and verbal communication skills.

This position has an initial appointment for one year and may be renewable.

Program Manager: TEAMS and RKSER initiatives

Position Overview

Reporting to the Director of the TEAMS initiative and the Co-Directors of RKSER of the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, the candidate will work independently and pro-actively towards program development, implementation, enhancement and pre- and post-award management of team science training, team advice and consultation service, data collection, analysis, and reporting, event planning, and other programmatic goals. This position works closely with Irving Institute senior administration as well as other resource Program Managers.

The Irving Institute is home to Columbia University’s Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), which was launched by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2006 and has expanded to over 50 academic medical institutions across the United States.

TEAMS: The Program Manager will assist Dr. Lee in coordinating all operational aspects of the TEAMS initiative. S/he will coordinate team meetings and facilitate ongoing telephone, email, and in person communication among team members in order to ensure that the project proceeds according to plan and budget. They will work closely with the core team to support data collection, analysis and presentation and manuscript preparation, CUIMC wide outreach activities and dissemination and will provide support and will be responsible for administrative tasks related to preparing and disseminating materials for the TEAMS initiative and event coordination.

RKSER: The Program Manager will provide operational support for RKSER and will support the Co-Directors in day-to-day activities across all RKSER programs. They will oversee the management and scheduling for the resource, and help with manuscript preparation and collection of data for analysis and reporting.


  • Oversee all aspects of the TEAMS initiative and RKSER Resource activities including: planning the master timeline for programmatic goals and guaranteeing the schedule is adhered to; administration, publicity and coordination of consultation service requests, consults and reports, team science data collection, analysis, presentations and manuscript preparation
  • Serving as primary contact for TEAMS initiative questions and inquiries; planning and implementing events, and coordinating communication with TEAMS faculty and staff.
  • Program development, evaluation and continuous improvement (including maintaining TEAMS data and materials, informational website, RKSER materials, and all corresponding materials), as well as events management (including open houses, luncheons, poster sessions, committee meetings, trainings, workshops and seminars).
  • Announcing TEAMS awardees and monitoring TEAMS activities and collecting initiative outcomes to be reported in annual progress reports, the Common Metrics initiative and other presentations and reports, as needed.
  • Serve as a member of the larger Irving Institute Program Manager’s team including working with other program managers of the Irving Institute to fully execute Irving Institute goals and mission. The Program Manager will join the Irving Institute administrative core in providing support for major Irving Institute events including the annual External Advisory Board, Internal Advisory Committee, retreats and symposia, as needed. They will also support evaluation and reporting needs, including preparation of the annual NIH-required progress reports, preparation of grant funding applications, etc.
  • Participate on CTSA-related national committees and attending conferences as needed
  • Perform general administrative functions including document preparation, filing, and scanning.
  • Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience plus four years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates with experience in program development, management, and data collection, analysis and publication preparation in an academic setting will be viewed as extremely competitive.  
  • Experience with conduct of clinical research in order to provide services for helping research teams to navigate Resource offerings.
  • Demonstrated achievement in project management, organizational and follow-through skills, superior interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, close attention to detail, high degree of proficiency with computer software (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, project management tools), ability to quickly learn new computer programs, strong work ethic, ability to work independently, experience interacting with all levels of faculty, management and staff, and ability to manage multiple programs and initiatives.
